About this title

Synopsis:

A hilarious story, adapted from a novel by Meira Chand, about the inhabitants of a block of flats, Sadhbela, in Bombay. They are Sindhi refugees, who fled Sind at the time of partition. Now, in 1991, a second generation has grown up, hypnotised by the bright lights of Bombay and beyond, rebelling against a generation desperate to hold on to the old ways.
Mrs Hathiramani, who lives by the horoscope, finds Saturn has entered the House of the Sun, where it will remain for three interesting months. Rani, Pinky and Sushu idle away afternoons dreaming of rich husbands. The Watumal family with unmarriageable daughters and a lazy son, blame their fate on jealous neighbours. Sham Pumnani, the embezzler, fails to satisfy a family whose needs are never fulfilled, and Lakshmi, his sister, enters an arranged marriage without an adequate dowry. Meanwhile, Mrs Bhagwandas teams up with Mrs Hathiramani as the matchmakers of Sadhbela...
