Bound in half leather with marbled boards. 2 color illustrations (printed in oil color) and 1 black and white illustration present. Included in this volume is a biography of King Alfred, discovery of land by Columbus, great eruption of the volcano of Kilanea in 1840, Wild Nell the White Mountain girl, Oliver Goldsmith bio, the war in Italy, the plague in Malta, War Items, Beards and hair, the Kinlock tragedy, the Duke of Wellington, and of particular note, an article titled: SOMETHING LIKE A CONJUROR, being a 5 page biography of Robert Houdin, the famed magician from whom Harry Houdini took his name. In POOR/FAIR condition. Very heavy scuffing and scratching to the covers, with some loss of boards to the rear cover. Some soiling and fading. Very heavy edgewear with scuffing, bumping and fraying. Spine very faded and scuffed. The first several pages are detached from the text block, with pages 359-362 and page 549 also detached. The rest of the text is solid but should be handled with care. Some owner’s names and writing in the front and back inside cover. Some names also written in the text on the back of blank pages. Heavy dampstaining in the gutter of the last 1/3 of the pages. Text with minor soiling and moderate browning to the pages. Overall moderate to heavy wear to this book, in POOR/FAIR condition. Bookseller Inventory # 000531
