Each volume with frontispiece and two-half-titles, both titles are cancels. Original gray publisher's cloth, crest of William Penn in red to upper covers, seal of William Penn in red to lower covers, spines slightly worn at extremities. From the library of Byron Price, with his bookplate. First published edition, binding B, of what is considered Mitchell's greatest work. A historical novel, it is set in Philadelphia during the American Revolution. After the book was printed and bound in 1896, a decision was made to postpone its publication and to first run it serially in the Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine. The present edition differs from the pre-publication edition in that the titles pages are cancels, with the new date of 1897, and frontispieces were inserted.
