About this title

Synopsis:

Human Slices is a love story about a woman who is happily childfree by choice. Or is it that she is childless by destiny? No matter. For her, it's a natural decision guided by what's inside her own "human slices." No hand-wringing or regret, no drama or cost/benefit analysis. Being a mother just doesn't interest her.

She spells her name S-A-L-M but pronounces it Sam. "The l is silent," she says. It's her way of combining her given name, Samantha, with her father's nickname for her, Little Salmon.

On a promising spring day in Chicago, she visits the Museum of Science and Industry and makes her way to the human slices exhibit. It's always been one of her favorite displays, a series of vivisections of the human body, real flesh and bones. She is fascinated by the thought that the same shapes and forms are stacked inside her own body, taking charge of her moves and decisions.

When a tall, intriguing man approaches the exhibit, Salm makes a natural choice: She follows him.

About the Author:

I am a writer and editor who lives and works in Chicago.

The long version of the story has a beginning about growing up in a steel town in the Midwest and a middle about moving to the big city after college with no specific aspirations in mind, just a general sense of anticipation stuffed into the corner of my suitcase.

Many years and adventures later, I'm still here in Chicago, dug in deep -- even though I often imagine myself living in a cabin in the north woods of Wisconsin and on Friday nights, driving in to town to sing at a little piano bar. Or maybe living in a rickety thatched-roof hut on a Caribbean beach...and on Friday nights, driving in to town to sing at a little piano bar.

I wrote my first book, Human Slices, during the time I was enrolled in graduate school, majoring in creative writing, at Columbia College in Chicago. It's a love story with a female protagonist who is quite happily childfree by choice, like me.

My professional background includes extensive experience as a magazine editor, writing teacher, and communications director. I currently provide freelance editorial services, helping authors with story and character development, copy editing, and line-by-line proofreading. I also work with small businesses and associations on telling their own stories by creating newsletters, brochures, blog posts, and related materials. I contribute to a film blog at homeprojectionist.com.

Three other things about me? (1) I like to laugh really loud. (2) I love cats. (3) I am an obsessive maker of lists, constantly scribbling on scratch paper, backs of envelopes, and sticky notes.
