Pp. 34, (4); 60 full page color plates (including frontispiece plate) that pair hummingbirds with the orchids they feed on, 59 small drawings in green that serve as a key to the plates. Publisher's original gray course-weave cloth, lettered in gilt on the spine and front cover, folio (16 x 11 3/4 inches). A beautiful volume that remained in manuscript since 1878. Due to a variety of factors, the author was unable to arrange publication during his lifetime. However, the chance appearance of a portfolio of his prints about 75 years after his death finally made publication possible in 1963. This work was published in a numbered limited edition of 3000 copies: 1500 in English and 1500 in Spanish; this is copy no. 1492 of 1500 of the English edition. The editing and foreword is by Carolina Amor de Fournier and the introduction and descriptions of the hummingbirds is by Rafael Martin del Campo. The translation into English was made by Norman Pelham Wright. The 60 beautiful colored plates were reproduced from the original watercolors housed in the Galería de Arte Mexicano, México, D.F.; these watercolors were painted by Rafael Montes de Oca from 1874-1878. There are two small circular blind-stamps of former owners on the bottom corner of the title page; the names are Ralph Lima and Donald Hanover. The style and size of both blind-stamps is identical. Small bump to the top outer corner affecting the corner of the page edges; overall, a bright and clean copy in near fine condition. Bookseller Inventory #
