About this Item

Very scarce humorous Valentine, circa 1840s, with hand-coloring. It does not bear a publisher's name, but its resemblance to other cards by Marks & Sons of London leads to an assumption that it was this company which issued the card. This one is entitled: "To a Drover", and pictured is an odd shaped man with a porcine face, an oversized head, and vaguely the bearing of a four legged animal, whether horse, goat or other form of livestock. Accompanying him is a herding dog, and a thought bubble contains the non-words: "Co afore um", which would seem a bumpkin accented attempt to say, "Go forward". The poisoned pen verse below is as follows: "Oh! who could think of love, and thee, Go herd your filthy cattle! And leave to cleaner -- milder brutes, Love's joys and gentle prattle, When next you try to woo a maid, Pray like a Bull don't bellow: Dick, always recollect your [sic] are A Drover -- ugly Fellow." The card, then, not only provides insight on a mean-spirited form of humor then in some sort of fashion, but also on attitudes towards rural workers. Dimensions are 22 by 16.5 cm, 8.5 by 6.5 inches. One minor closed tear. Heavily age toned. Bookseller Inventory # 002845

Shipping Terms:

The shipping cost provided automatically by ABE assumes that the item is the size of an average hardcover book. Since our stock is comprised largely of material which is bigger and heavier, we will often need to request additional shipping charges as a result. We pride ourselves on always packing safely, with the actual materials and method of packing depending on the item(s), where it is going, and with whom we are shipping. We most frequently use the post office, but on some high value items, or upon request, we may use alternatively UPS or FedEx. With the postal service, to domestic destinations with lower value items and the automatically furnished ABE shipping quote, we will usually use Media Mail; on higher value items we are partial to Priority or Express Mail. We will always seek to comply with a customer's wishes if they are communicated to us. When we seek additional shipping charges, we pass along those charges at our cost -- we do not add for handling or materials generally.
