About this Item

The Modern World: A Survey of Historical Forces series edited by H.A.L. Fisher: First Edition, 1934. "The author has written an excellent book for the general reader. It is informing, in parts even learned, but facts are dealt out with a light and knowing pen, and the whole is woven with fine imagination and sympathy into a story in which the people themselves, one of the most interesting in Europe, come fully to life before us. The Book falls naturally into three parts. The first is historical, the life story of the Magyar nation. It is built up with great skill upon an interpretation of the influence which the geographical habitat has had upon the social structure of the nation, as well as upon its politics. In the second part he takes up severally the main institutions and sections of the nation, discussing their characteristics and making clear the part of each in the general scheme of the nation's life. The section on national minorities forms the link with the last, the political part, in which the problem of revision and Hungary's foreign policy are discussed. He concludes tht a revision of frontiers will not solve the problem of the Middle Danube Basin, but only a readjustment of the relationships between nation and State, whereby frontiers will gradually cease to matter." D. Mitrany. Ex libris plate of the well know scholar on front pastedown. Minor edge wear with foxing to prelims and lightly age-toned text block edges. Clean, tight and strong binding with no underlining, highlighting or marginalia. Green cloth with gilt lettering to spine, and map on rear endpapers. Size: 8vo. Bookseller Inventory # 003112
