Octavo; pp; I; xiv, 17-326; II; viii, 9-303; Illustrated with a frontispiece and six black and white inserted plates; red cloth decorated in blind, spine decorated in gilt, blue leather spine label lettered in gilt, yellow coated endpapers; This copy has been professionally re-backed; Spine label a bit worn else, very good. Scottish traveller and sportsman, known as the "lion hunter," was the 4th baronet of Altyre and Gordonstown. At eighteen, he joined the East India Co.'s service as a cornet in the Madras Light Cavalry. A hunting enthusiast, his first books with greeted with incredulity, until David Livingstone, of Stanley fame, vouched for the accuracy of his big game narratives in public.
