About this Item

Quarto. (104)pp. One of 130 copies, signed by the artist. Illustrated with nineteen full-page lithographs from etchings by the surrealist Max Ernst. There are also three small vignettes. This is a bilingual edition of Carroll's nonsensical epic poem about a crew of ten men in pursuit of a mythic beast. Vividly colored illustrations are paired with the original English poem, and the same images are repeated in stark black & white to accompany the German text, translated by Klaus Reichert. The Hunting of the Snark was created late in Ernst's career and was the second of three works by Lewis Carroll illustrated by him. Born in Germany, Ernst began his career in art in the 1910s, inspired by the work of post-Impressionist artists and Pablo Picasso. Although primarily a painter, he also branched out into collage, sculpture, and lithographic printing, and he finally achieved financial success after the publication of his treatise, "Beyond Painting," in 1948. Loose, as issued, in publisher's cloth chemise and slipcase. Slight fading, soiling, and a small bump to slipcase, otherwise fine. Bookseller Inventory # 25881
