About this Item

Original INDEPENDENCE MINE bank check, issued on The Bank of Victor, Victor, Cripple Creek Gold Mining District, Colorado. Dated May 8, 1899, Victor, Colo. The signature of W. S. Stratton is by a secretary, "Per Grant." Superb steel-engraving of the Independence Mine, on Battle Mine, above Victor, Colorado. Winfied Scott Stratton was a carpenter/prospector who lived in Colorado Springs, Colorado, at the base of Pikes Peak, for nearly 20 years before discovering rich gold properties in the newly formed Cripple Creek Gold Mining District in 1891. Within a few years, Stratton became one of the wealthiest men in Colorado. But what he did with his wealth was even more astounding. Stratton used it to help the unfortunate, downtrodden, and physically challenged. Check has an RN-X7 revenue imprint, a tax used to finance the Spanish-American War. Historical document in fine condition. Bookseller Inventory # 000064
