8 vo. 651 pp, plus 5 pgs of publisher's adverts. Original dark brown cloth with designs and titles on front and spine.Double frontis with tissue guard. An 1870 printing, probably a third state, with corrections. Portrait of Napoleon III on pg. 129, numbered pgs present in table of contents, pg. 643 titled LXI, adverts include "Personal History of Ulysses S. Grant." Condition is VERY GOOD ; corners worn with a little board showing, covers very clean with gilt bright, a bit less bright at spine. Front has a very faint ring mark. Both spine ends have very small tears, each with some mild fraying. The outer rear joint has a closed tear, 3" long from the upper edge, with the spine in that area lightly repaired with wheat paste. Binding is soild and the text and plates are bright and unmarked. Several early PO's names on endpapers and early blank pgs, one stamped in cursive. Dedication pg. has early name in pencil, with Maine address, and a long note in pencil, in a later hand, below the dedication. A nice early copy of Twain's second book, often seen in terrible condition, or rebound. Travel. RGR. Bookseller Inventory # 25584
