About this Item

First edition. 8vo, original purple cloth, lettered in gilt on spine, in dustjacket. 91. A fine copy. SCARCE IN SUCH FINE CONDITION. This play was written "at the request of a German actor who wished to play a new Faustian role; why Irish? Because, says Mr. Durrell, realizing that I could not leave a pennon on the heights already scaled by Goethe, Lessing and Valéry, not to mention Byron (MANFRED), I thought it wiser to stay nearer to Kit Marlowe and dispense with the more classical associations. The scenes being laid in Galway, the legend here acquires some new characters as well as fresh relationshpis between the old, but the plot is so changed that the action is simplied and concentrated. There is a dark theme, and there is a comic theme, and both, in AN IRISH FAUSTUS, are characteristic of Lawrence Durrell" (dustjacket). A fine copy of a work by this brilliant and diverse author.
