Item description from seller

Typis Monasterij Einsidlenis, Per Nicolaum Wagenmann, 1669, 4°, (2), (14), 361, (33) pp., Pergamenteinband d.Zt.; teilweise etwas gebräunt, feines Expl. Important document in the History of the Doctrine of Syphilis! "is not only transmitted from women to men but (since it is reciprocal) also from men to women." "Sassonia was taken to task in the seventeenth century by the physician Giovanni Battista Sitoni (1605-1681), who discussed the matter under the chapter heading: "Whether a man suffering from the French disease will be cured of the disease by intercourse with a virgin?" To my knowledge, Sitoni is the first physician to emphasize that man and woman both labor under the scourge of venereal disease. In fact, the discussion of this farsighted Milanese physician (on whom the standard biographical dictionary by August Hirsch is disappointingly brief) has a preface that we may call (admittedly anachronistically) "feminist" on the relative value of man and woman. It concludes that both are "correlative" (correlativa, p. 288). Far from being a commonplace at that time, the idea of their correlative nature becomes a focal point of Sitoni's argument. Sitoni is possibly also the first to say with similar emphasis that the disease "is not only transmitted from women to men but (since it is reciprocal) also from men to women." In this context Sitoni reports that "nevertheless a certain remedy of this scourge is pranked up as if it could serve as the safest cure of infected men," namely coition with a virgin. Sitoni objects that there is no truth to the claim, nor can there be, for it would be just as absurd to claim that an infected woman could be cured of the disease by sleeping with an inexperienced male. He is so fond of this argument, derived from his axiom of the correlative nature of man and woman, that he will repeat it later in even greater detail (p. 292). He assigns the presumed powers of virginity to mere popular belief (credit vulgus, p. 291) and, drawing on humoral physiology, reasons that coition does not change the balance of the patient's humors, which (according to Galen) would be necessary for a cure." Winfried Schleiner, Medical Ethics in the Renaissance (1990), pp. 190 ff. Giovanni Battista Sitoni (1605-1681), "geb. 7 Juni 1605 in Mailand, studirte in Pavia, promivirte dasselbst 1628, liess sich ein seiner Geburtsstadt nieder, wo er in seiner Praxis die Lehren Settala's befolgte und siedelte später nach Mailand über, wo er 8. October 1681 starb. Er schrieb "Ticinius" (1695) - "Nocturna Veneris apparitio" (IB.) - "Veneris monile" (Ib. 1627) drei sehr beifällig aufgenommene Gedichte - "Iatrosophiiae miscellaneorum, sive sapiential medica (1641); Einsiedel (1649); Strassb. 1670; Cöln (1676)."
