About this Item

Folio. [4], x (pp. ix-x misbound at end), 81, [1]pp. Parallel text in German and Latin. 30 plates engraved by J. Bruch with 385 figures. 335 x 258 mm. Half morocco in period style. Some foxing and faint dampstaining, one or two pencil notes in plates but a very good copy. Leipzig: Voss, 1839. First Book Edition, from the original three fascicules. This atlas of physiology and embryology, human and comparative, summarizes pictorially Wagner's research in his most fruitful period, during which he made his most important original contributions. This was the decade from 1830 to 1840, when he discovered the nucleolus (1835; G-M 109.1) and published his highly accurate studies on spermatozoa (1837), demonstrated that red blood corpuscles have no nuclei (1833), and studied the retina and the choroidea (1835). At the end of this period, after teaching comparative anatomy at Erlangen, he was asked to replace Germany's foremost comparativist and physiologist, J. F. Blumenbach. There was a supplementary volume published in the 1840s, introducing new material, but the 1839 volume should be considered complete in itself. DSB. Hirsch. Waller 10071, 1839 vol. only.
