About this Item

Folio (22 x 14 4/8 inches). Half-title. 55 hand-colored lithographic plates by and after P. L. Oudart, F. Willy and E. Blanchard, printed by Lemercier (plates and text leaves loose, some minor spotting, and some edges a bit frayed). Housed in modern red buckram folding portfolio with morocco lettering piece. "The hand-colored bird portraits are extremely fine" (McGill/Wood) First edition, and intended to supplement Madame Knip, Temminck and Prevost's celebrated "Les Pigeons" (1808-1811), Prince Bonaparte's "Iconographie des Pigeons" stands alone as an excellent portrait of some extremely exotic pigeons from regions as diverse as Australia and the Himalayas. Although Bonaparte had intended to include 164 more Pigeons that Knip et al, he died after only 20 lithographs had been published, and with a further 35 ready for publication. The resulting "Iconographie." was edited and completed by A. Moquin-Tandon, a distinguished ornithologist, botanist, and member of the Institut Went in Paris. Fine Bird Books p. 60; Nissen IVB 117; Ronsil p. 58; Wood p. 248; Zimmer p. 78. Catalogued by Kate Hunter. Bookseller Inventory # 72nhr86
