About this Item

Second printing (June, 1937). 8vo. 436pp. Origin of Names; Bibliography; Index. Photo-illustrations; Maps (numerous full-page; 3 fold-outs; large folding color map in rear pocket). Dark green cloth wtih gilt lettering and gilt-embossed mountain lake scene to front board in photo-illustrated dustjacket. A near fine copy in good dustjacket (wear and chips to extremities with some loss at spine ends; short closed tears; tape repairs to backside along upper edge; rear flap & rear spine joint split along fold line); still a nice copy in uncommon dustjacket. The first American Guide published by the WPA. Most of the first printing in January, 1937, was destroyed in a warehouse fire thus the need for the second printing so soon after the first. Notable changes include the addition of Vardis Fisher as author on the title page and the large, folding map in rear pocket. Much on history and anthropology of the Indians; flora 7 fauna; hunting & fishing; legends, ghost towns & buried treasures; early pioneers; origins of its names; 11 Tours, etc. (Herd 46, Howes F153; Six-Guns 33).
