About this title

Bess understands her younger sister's wish for a doll and does her best to satisfy that wish.

From School Library Journal:

Kindergarten-Grade 2-- Ida lives with her grandmother and her older sister, Bess; their sunny, one-room cottage in the idyllic, pristine, European-looking small village is the center of most family activity. Barefoot, pink-cheeked children play follow-the-leader outside during the day; at night, Ida wishes for a doll to love and hug. Because her family is apparently too poor to buy one, unselfish and understanding Bess gives Ida her arm to cradle (as she would a doll). As she sleeps contentedly, Ida dreams of hundreds of wonderful dolls. This nostalgic story focuses on the close relationship between the sisters and, to a lesser extent, with their hard-working grandmother. The characters are not well developed, however; one never comes to know them well. That the family is poor is conveyed primarily through visual cues in softly hued, highly idealized illustrations. As with the text, more is implied than presented, leaving a great deal up to readers. Adults may find this more appealing than children. --Maria B. Salvadore, District of Columbia Public Library
