".Creative Internationalism."; notes, literature, biographical notes, reproduction credits with color and b&w illustrations throughout. First Edition, 1998. "As happened so frequently at the beginning of Modernism, a common style emerged among different artists through their contributions to an art journal. Under Theo von Doesburg as editor-in- chief, De Stijl magazine attracted Dutch, Belgian and German artists, such as the painters Mondrian and Vantongerloo, the archtitect and interior designer Rietveld and the architects van 't Hoff and Oud. De Stijl also had contact and exchanged ideas with the Bauhaus in Weimar, where van Doesburg taught for a while. Intent on developing a totally new vocabulary of form and rather than depicting a certain subject, they aimed at communicating with the viewer through the manifold and subtle variation of a few elementary compositional principles, such as horizontal versus vertical, small versus large, light versus dark and the three primary coulours, all which stir up and sharpen our ability to perceive the nuances of simple visual phenomena." from the jacket flap.
