First edition. Very scarce. Hardcover in pale gren cloth lettered in glt. 126 pp. A tight example but with some soiling and staining about the edges of the front cover, some light wear and darkening to the spine strip. Laid in is a single sheet promotional note from the publisher sayinmg that along with the copy of this book they were also sending another (unnamed) "literary work of a colored man, born in slavery.unique among African people, and as such we believe it will attract the attention of the entire colored race." Albery Allson Whitney was a black poet, orator and minister. He was born into slavery in Kentucky in 1851; after he was freed, he attended Wilberforce University and became known as "The Poet Laureate of The Negro Race".
