About this Item

Vols 1 and 6 of the Second 12mo (6.25in x 4in) Edition of this timeless masterpiece, published in 1720 and 1721 (Second Edition stated on title page). According to Griffith's Alexander Pope: A Bibliography, the 12mo editions were published after Pope's Iliad was 'printed in Holland and clandestinely imported' in duodecimo format (rather than the original folio) which 'forced Lintot to publish a duodecimo' (91). This is the Second Duodecimo Edition. Vol 6 in original binding, w/repaired hinges; Vol 1 rebacked, using original boards (also has a modern bookplate on the fpastedown). The first original leaf is the King's license to Bernard Lintot for exclusive publication, signed James Stanhope, followed by the frontis portrait of Pope by Vertue. The half-title page follows, backed by a second frontis of a bust of Homer (unidentified artist). The original title page is torn across the top and a 1755 owner's name is lost. Then follows the Preface, an essay on Homer by Pope, and the first four books of the Iliad. Each book has a frontis; in this volume the artist is unidentified. In addition to the frontis for Book 3, there are 2 folding plates: one has maps of 'Graecia Homerica' and 'Phrygia' and the other apparently depicts coins and monuments dedicated to Homer; they are separated by a geographical table of places mentioned. Vol 6 consists of Books 22-24, followed by several indices (it is the final volume). It is greatly enhanced by the 3 frontispieces of Elisha Kirkall, which are of masterpiece quality. Note: the famous folding plate of the Shield of Achilles appeared with Book 18, and is not present here. Overall in just good condition and woefully incomplete; still a rare and beautiful addition to any library of great poetry or great illustration. Bookseller Inventory # 12668
