About this Item

Selected Farming and Wood lands, in tracts of forty acres and upwards, to suit purchasers, on Long Credits and at Low Rates of Interest, situated on each side of their rail-road, extending all the way from the extreme north to the south of the State of Illinois. New York: John W. Amerman, Printer, 1856. Octavo, original printed yellow wrappers. 64 pages, with a double-page lithographed map "Railway Guide to the Illinois Central Railroad Lands" (actually, national in scope), and a single-page map "Outline Map of Illinois" showing railroad lines in current operation as well as lines proposed or being constructed. (Both maps lithographed by Ed Mendel of Chicago). Wrappers lightly stained and a little wrinkled, but otherwise in very good condition. An elaborate advertisement, directed principally to farmers, for available farming land along railway lines across the State of Illinois. Includes much testimonial information by actual farmers, on conditions, successful crops and techniques, available lumber (all of it owned by the railroad, which also delivered coal), fares from New York to Chicago by different routes, what to bring, and more. The Illinois Central Railroad, which was the first railroad to receive a federal land grant, was chartered in 1851 to build a railroad from Cairo, Illinois, at the joining of the Ohio and Mississippi rivers, to Galena, in the extreme northwestern corner of the state (the "Old Main"), with a branch from Centralia to Chicago (the "Chicago Branch"). The line was finished in 1856 when this little pamphlet was published, giving Chicago a route to New Orleans by way of a railroad-operated steamboat line between Cairo and New Orleans.
