From the private library of Herbert McLean Evans, with his initials in soft lead pencil to the back of the front wrapper and his ex libris sticker at the bottom. Evans [1882-1971] was a highly regarded U.S. anatomist and embryologist. He was an ardent collector of rare books and of Japanese ukiyo-e prints. As for Judson D. Metzgar, [1870-1958], in addition to being a collector, Metzgar was also author of Adventures in Japanese Prints (Grabhorn Press, ca. 1940) and similar works. In addition to the 1919 catalogue, a catalogue for the public sale of part of Metzgar’s collection was conducted at the American Art Association in New York on November 13th & 14th, 1916. The sale is widely regarded as one of the most important sales of the first half of the 20th century of Japanese color prints. The Metzgar sale of 1916 is listed at p. 10, The Evolution of Ukiyoé: The Artistic, Economic and Social Significance of Japanese Wood-Block Prints, by Takahashi Sei-Ichiro, 1955.
