About this title
This book illustrates over 2,000 documentary examples of English ceramic art (marked and unmarked) to create a virtual encyclopedia of marked and unmarked specimens. It can be used in conjunction with the 'Encyclopedia of British Pottery and Porcelain Marks' as well as the 15th edition of Chaffer's 'Marks and Monograms' or to any other mark book or general ceramic reference books ranging from c. 1650 to 1900.
In order to assist the beginner characteristics which are usually described in words are here illustrated -- pad marks on Derby figures and vases, stilt marks under Chelsea plates and dishes, typical bases of early Chelsea wares with incised triangle marks, workmen's marks on the inside of a Lowestoft foot-rim, etc. An outline history of the different types of ware is included in the summary and historical details of the major manufacturers is given at the beginning of the relevant sections. Every effort has been made to show prosaic as well as rare specimens; late wares as well as early.
