About this Item

Pp. xvi, 192; 14 full page plates (1 geological map, 8 sections and 5 lithographs of fossil invertebrates and plants (1 map and 7 sections are hand-colored) + xx, 253, (1); 25 plates (22 lithographs of invertebrates and plants and 2 folding sections and 1 large folding geological maps (all monochrome). Recent polished one-half black morocco leather, spine with five raised bands titled in gilt on black leather and green leather labels in three compartments, over English pale blue marbled boards with pale blue endpapers, 4to (284 x 215 mm). John Phillips (1800-1874) was an English geologist who published the first global geologic time scale based on the correlation of fossils in rock strata, thereby helping to standardize terminology including the term Mesozoic, which he coined. After both of his parents died he was raised by his uncle, William Smith, known as the 'father of geology.' Smith is credited with creating the first nationwide geological map linking of England and Wales into a single record (modified after Wiki). Phillips first major monograph was the 'Geology of Yorkshire,' first published in 1829. This important work went through three editions. This first edition is quite rare. Gifted by English geologist, J. Selwyn Turner, to American paleontologist Arthur K. Miller, with a signed note from Turner laid on at front. There is a short note in pencil on first title page likely in the hand of J. Selwyn Turner. Scattered foxing to some monochrome lithographed plates, mostly confined to the rear (blank) side of the plates, title page of part 2 with mild foxing, a few pages of the text also some just a touch of foxing, the fine binding is very bright and clean; overall a tight copy in near fine condition.
