Ferriar, John (1761-1815). Illustrations of Sterne: with other essays and verses. 2 vols. in one, 8vo. xii, , 20-193; 222pp. London: J. & J. Haddock for Cadell & Davies, 1812. 183 x 121 mm. Half morocco gilt, marbled boards in antique style by Bernard Middleton, with gilt spine beautifully tooled. Light toning but very good. Bookplate of K. Garth Huston. Second edition, enlarged. Ferriar's work, first published in 1798, amplifies and illustrates various aspects of Laurence Sterne's Tristam Shandy, and in the process provides one of the earliest printed expositions and defenses of Tagliacozzi's methods of rhinoplasty published in English before the revival by Carpue in 1816. In Chapter 6 of the present edition, entitled "Mr. Shandy's hypothesis of noses explained," Ferriar discusses the work of Tagliacozzi and defends his methods, quoting some sections from the original Latin. Ferriar's discussion shows thorough acquaintance with Tagliacozzi's text. The second volume of the book includes the second edition of Ferriar's poem "Bibliomania" (first published in 1809), which was the first work to name the condition suffered by many book collectors. Not in Gnudi & Webster. Cushing F 106 (citing this edition). Bookseller Inventory # 27370
