About this title

Earlier volumes of Honour's monumental study are cited in BCL3 . Volume four, in two books, studies the images of blacks by white American and European visual artists from the American revolution to World War I. Part one focuses on slavery and its aftermath; part two covers other themes during the s

From Library Journal:

The Image of the Black in Western Art is a massive effort to document and analyze the depiction of black people by white artists from ancient times to now. This fourth volume of the series may be the most significant because it covers the historical era that saw the worst abuses of the slavery system and the rise of modern racist attitudes. Honour's research reveals how European and American artists both reflected and influenced popular attitudes toward Africans and their descendants. This volume is presented in two books. The first book focuses on images of slavery and its abolition, while the second considers blacks in other, typically exotic or orientalist, contexts. Honour reveals the diversity of attitude toward blacks in the period from the late 18th to the early 20th centuries by offering an incisive analysis of the sociopolitical environment in which the many art objects illustrated were produced. Because they offer a sociological perspective on a still controversial issue, these books have an audience far beyond most art publications. Highly recommended to art libraries and any library serving an ethnically diverse population.
