Synopsis: Part of a series which looks at fundamental issues which affect everyday life, this book deals with AIDS, and is supported by case histories. It presents information in an accessible way in order to help young people develop their own perspective on the subject.
From School Library Journal:
Grade 6-10 --Both of these books will be easily accessible to older reluctant readers looking for quick information. Armstrong discusses both the medical and the social impact of AIDS worldwide. He challenges readers to consider the effect of AIDS on individuals and communities, as well as the outlook for future generations. Unfortunately, he gives many statistics without citing any sources. Neither bibliographies nor good notes are included. Hodder focuses solely on the problems encountered by "melded family units" and offers only vague suggestions about societal acceptance and understanding as resolutions. Children and young adults may come away from reading Stepfamilies with a feeling of hopelessness. Other titles that present a more positive view, yet do not gloss over problems unique to stepfamilies include Bradley's Where Do I Belong? (Harper, 1982), Getzhoff's Stepkids: A Survival Guide for Teenagers in Stepfamilies (Walker, 1985), and Sobol's My Other-Mother, My Other-Father (Macmillan, 1979). Both Stepfamilies and The Impact of AIDS are carefully indexed and include case studies and sources for help. The texts are formatted with plenty of white space, and the full-color photographs represent many races and age groups. --Susan R. Farber, Ossining Public Library, NY
