About this Item

"Impressions of Theophrastus Such" by George Eliot. First American edition. Affixed on the front leaf is a letter, hand-written and signed by George Eliot with the name Mary Ann Lewes, her birth name and the last name of her partner. It thanks Harper Bros. for their advance of 50 for Theophrastus Such. It is dated June of 1879 on Eliot's letterhead from The Heights. Lewes is the surname of George Henry Lewes, Eliot's long-time life partner. Eliot's birth name was Mary Ann Evans and in addition to using the name George Eliot, she also signed her name Mary Ann Lewes. Following the letter is the envelope it was sent in. The letter has a light crease across the middle, as it would have been folded to go into the envelope, which would have traveled from England to the US offices of Harper & Brothers in New York. Th alf-bound in black morocco over marbled boards. Gilt lettering and decorations on the spine. Marbled endsheets and fore-edges of the textblock. The book is in very good minus to good pus condition. Rubbing to the boards with scuffed edges. Wear to the leather at the spine ends and hinges. Newspaper clipping stapled to the rear leaf. The textblock is gently toned but clean and bright with sound binding. Please view the many other rare titles available for purchase at our store.
