About this Item

Rare Academic Address on the Role of Universities from 1601 Setzer, Jeremias [1568-1608]. De Incrementis Academiaru[m]: Sive, De Caussis Magnitudinis Academiarum. Discursus Politicus: In Certas Hypomneses Distributus; Omnium Disciplinarum, & Inprimis Boni Academici Studiosis non Minus Utilis quam Lectu Iucundissimus Futurus. Frankfurt am Oder: Typis Sciurinis, 1601. [66] ff. 12mo. (5" x 2-3/4"). Stitched pamphlet in printed wrappers, cover printed in red and black within woodcut ornamental border, cover, with similar border, printed in red and black. Light soiling, some edgewear to wrappers and a few adjacent leaves, binding slightly cocked. Moderate toning to text, internally clean. Ex-library. Two small inkstamps to rear wrapper. An appealing copy of a rare title. $250. * Only edition. Setzer was a jurist and law professor who taught at the University of Jena and, later, University of Frankfurt am Oder. A fine example of late-humanist rhetoric, De Incrementis Academiarum is the published version of an academic address, most likely an inaugural address delivered at the commencement of the academic year at the University of Frankfurt am Oder. Setzer praises the role of universities and learned societies in the wider diffusion of knowledge in the last century and the qualities of a good university. This is a rare title. OCLC and VD17 locate 3 copies, all in Germany (Berlin Staatsbibliothek, Niedersachsische Staats- und Universitatsbibliothek, Gottingen, Herzog-August-Bibliothek, Wolfenbuttel). OCLC locates an additional copy, in Denmark (Det Kongelige Bibliotek, Copenhagen). Das Verzeichnis der im Deutschen Sprachraum Erschienenen Drucke des 17. Jahrhunderts 23:258502E.
