Synopsis: Book by Park, Ted
From School Library Journal:
Grade 4-6-These books are divided into one- to two-page chapters, providing a general overview of geography, government, and religion. Additional topics explored include school, holiday fun, and how people make a living, and there are brief analyses of what the future may hold for these countries. Yet from the titles and headings of the first chapters, "You're in China!" and "You're in India!" one would assume participation in an imaginary journey. Instead, many facts are given; they're important but do not tie in with the titles. Captioned photographs appear on nearly every page. It is interesting to note that the China map has more rivers on it than cities, and the reason is not explained. Glossaries attempt to give phonetic pronunciation. However, in China it is a bit confusing. For instance, the Yellow River has been translated from the Chinese characters to Huang He and listed under H in the glossary. Beside this word is "hwan hee" to guide students as to how to say it correctly. There is definitely something to learn from these titles, and for younger readers, the information is more appealing than an encyclopedia.
