Book Description E. P. Dutton & Co., NY, 1881. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. No Jacket. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. Maroon cloth, beveled boards, covers ornately illustrated in gilt & brown, black endpapers, 12 chromos, 4 tinted plates (crayon drawings), 55 pages. Wear at corners, edges and spine ends, scuffing and some spotting on back cover, interior pages occassional light soiling from reading along edges, a few of the tissues have offsetting and are wrinkled or separated. Generally, the illustrations are in very good condition. To American poets only I am indebted for these verses, and to the woods of Maryland for the studies. Front hinge starting. Between 1876 and 1884 " L. Clarkson" produced eight handsome volumes of poetic extracts illustrated chromolithographically. The best known of these is probably The Gathering of the Lilies (1877), but the present volume is the most elaborate and perhaps the most attractive. The color plates depict autumnal flowers and leaves. The poetry is drawn from the whole range of American poets, including the illustrator, Full name of the author is Louise Clarkson Whitelock.
