About this Item

Tucson: Arizona Silhouettes, 1952. Octavo, cloth, in a dust wrapper. Pp.xix, 56, illustrated. Dust wrapper is lightly worn and dampstained, but otherwise a very good copy of the First Edition. Byron Cummings' pioneer work in Southwest archaeology and ethnography began while he was a professor at the University of Utah in 1906, when he took a horse-back trip into the canyons of the Green River in eastern Utah. In 1915 he was invited by the University of Arizona in Tucson to develop a State Museum and to build a department of archaeology. He was actively engaged in this work from 1915 to 1938. Much of his field work over a span of more than forty years was carried out on Indian reservations throughout the Southwest, where he came to know and appreciate the stalwart character and abilities of many of the Native Americans.
