806, illus., charts, footnotes, bibliography, index, bookplate, some weakness front board, some discoloration inside fr bd & flyleaf. Boards somewhat scuffed and small stains. The author is believed to be a direct descendant of the Revolutionary War figure, Richard Stockton. This work is dedicated to George Washington, Theodore Roosevelt, John J. Pershing, and Leonard Wood. There is substantial reference to Roosevelt in the index, especially on the topic of national defense (pages 438-454). In writing on the vital need for adequate national defense, the author considers the long and consistent failure of the theories of pacifism, the cause of war, the future possibilities of peace efforts, the lessons of military history, the nature of future war, and the nature and degree of military preparation required by the United States.
