Description:

This Book is in Good Condition. Clean Copy With Light Amount of Wear. 100% Guaranteed. Summary: "Neal Thornberry has done a wonderful job describing how innovators can walk the narrow path between organizational complexity and organizational wackiness. I love the metaphor of #145;judo' to describe the successful path of innovators in large organizations."--Dave Blakely, Director, IDEO"Truly a fresh approach to this topic. While other authors talk about what the organization has to do to innovate, Thornberry focuses on what the individual innovator or leader of innovation has to do even if a culture of innovation is not well established."--Tony Palmer, CEO Global Brands & Innovation, Kimberly Clark"I have read many books on innovation but Innovation Judo is the first one that provides innovators with concrete tools to help them deal with organizational roadblocks to innovation. And, most importantly, the principles don't require the culture to be changed before they can be employed."--Mike Vitale, Vice Admiral USN (Ret).Executive Director Applied Research Lab, University of Hawaii. Synopsis: Innovation is not always a welcome guest as it challenges the status quo and can increase both organizational uncertainty and ambiguity. Roadblocks and blockheads often threaten to derail even the best of ideas. Author Neal Thornberry is the first to codify a unique and little known set of leadership skills necessary for keeping ideas alive within the organization. Armed with Thornberry’s 7 Secret Innovation Judo principles, even the most daunting of barriers can be neutralized. This book introduces you to pioneers who have succeeded even when their organization’s culture was not particularly friendly to new ideas or even downright hostile. Thornberry offers a new diagnostic tool to help assess a company’s current receptivity to innovation called the Innovation Landscape Survey. With a wealth of practical tools provided, you will learn how to counterbalance innovation killers as you strive to build a world class organization.

From the Author: Interview with Neal Thornberry for Amazon

Is the problem with innovation a lack of new and worthy ideas?

Definitely not, people are born innovators.  Think of how small children adapt things in their environment to enrich their play.  They take large toy boxes and turn them into imaginary spaceships, airplanes, and boats. Even as youths we are still innovative.  Have you ever taken a rubber band and stretched it between thumb and forefinger, then shot it across the room?  Innovation is in our blood.  We create solutions all day long, inventing as we go, and we never lose this innate ability, even as we age. But often times we start to stifle this creativity through self-censorship so that we "fit" in a group. We may also experience this stifling in organizations that unwittingly kill innovation, even when they badly want it.

Most organizations today rank innovation as one of their top three goals. They work continually to motivate new ideas that will produce a competitive advantage in an ever changing and dangerous marketplace. Yet there is no shortage of ideas.  The real problems begin when new ideas surface and collide with the organization's established ways of doing business, its culture, and its people.  Not everyone welcomes the new, as Galileo found out when he said the universe did not revolve around the earth as the powerful religious leaders of his day believed. No matter how good an idea is, it will meet roadblocks that begin to choke off innovation, and anyone hoping to change the world, their company, or their department, must be prepared to deal with these roadblocks.  Learning to recognize these roadblocks and understanding how to overcome them is what my book is all about.
