About this Item

Of this left-handed slugger, Ty Cobb said, "I've known three or four perfect swings in my time. This boy's got one of them"; debuting with the Boston Braves in 1952, this third baseman led the National League in homeruns (47) in 1953 and set a record that lasted for 27 years; he was only the seventh player in major league history to hit 500 home runs; he was also the only man to play for the Boston Braves, Milwaukee Braves, and Atlanta Braves; he retired in 1968 and was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1978. Color IPS, 5" X 8", n.p., n.d. [but vintage, c. 1960]. Very good. Faint tape stain at each corner, else bright and quite attractive. This heavy stock glazed color half-length portrait shows Mathews in his heyday, in a batting stance wearing his Milwaukee Braves uniform. It was apparently a product endorsement (perhaps from a cereal box?) and is printed on thin shirt cardboard (visible only on verso, of course). There's a thin printed black rule about the edges and a printed "brass plaque" stating "Ed Mathews / Milwaukee Braves" printed near the bottom edge. Below Mathew's elbow is a printed signature. Across his chest, Mathews writes boldly in blue fountain pen: "Best Wishes / To Don Burnell / Ed Mathews." Unusual format -- quite handsome. Bookseller Inventory # 19770
