About this title

Synopsis:

Book by Ryan, Lisa Gail, Ryan, Lisa G.

From the Author:

I enjoyed keeping crickets while I worked on my book. They make beautiful sounds and are easy to keep. If you are considering a pet cricket for yourself, here are some suggestions to keep them happy and healthy:

  • Housing: Crickets can be raised with minimal care in small containers. A smooth sided container helps prevent escape. A thin layer of clean, damp sand can be placed in the bottom of the container, but isn't necessary provided they have places to climb and hide. Keep small paper containers such as paper towel rolls or egg cartons in the container to provide protection and hiding places.
  • Food: Crickets are omnivores. They need plants, grains, and protein. Commercially available cricket food can be found in many pet stores. Chicken mash and oatmeal are good staples. They also need plenty of fruit and vegetables. Place their food in a shallow dish and change it daily.
  • Water: Provide a continuos supply of clean water. A shallow saucer, like a bottle cap, should be filled with gravel or a small sponge to prevent crickets from drowning. Change their water daily.
  • Environment: Keep your crickets warm! The optimal temperature range is 70-75 degrees. I keep mine next to my computer while I am writing. They sing at night and keep me awake!
  • Cleaning: Remove the cricket and wash his cage with mild soap and water weekly. Rinse it thoroughly and allow it to dry completely before use. Good sanitation is essential.
  • Predators: Watch out for ants! Ants are predatory insects and will attack captive crickets. Keep your cricket out of direct sunlight, temperatures can soar in a plastic container.
