Period catspaw calf, gilt-stamped lettering in red and black leather spine labels, gilt-stamped lettering in spine compartments (5 raised bands); 3 parts bound in 2 volumes, 4to (248x189mm); pp. viii, 599, plus frontis., title-page printed in red and black, 18 folding plates; -1187,  (index), plus 21 folding plates; collates complete. Spines a bit dry, with small chips at tips; boards scuffed, with some gouges. Worming in the bottom margin throughout, occasionally grazing text and images, tho they remain mostly unscathed; restoration to verso of frontispiece. Stamp of Bibliotheca Gonzaleana, Les Mariodes. Perhaps the best known work of Lorenz Heister -- a German anatomist, surgeon and botanist born in Frankfurt am Main -- this was used as a standard text on surgery as late as 1838.
