About this title

Synopsis:

A Revolutionary Approach to Entrepreneurial Strategy

"Instructions to My Officers" by Herb D. Vest, CEO of True, is an informative book that details his perspective of how to be an inspirational entrepreneur by always pushing the envelope and most importantly by taking care of the customer. The book goes on to discuss Mr. Vest's experiences growing up in rural Texas, his time in the military, and his success at starting up niche companies that dominate their category.

Instructions to My Officers looks at the career, the methods, and the mind of this self-made millionaire to distill the common keys to titanic accumulations of wealth and success through groundbreaking, controversial methods. The four sections of the book explore topics such as entrepreneurial strategy, detailed business practices, his favorite parables, and finally, his soul bearing section which will inspire anyone to greater levels of performance. Each chapter explores a specific strategy and brings it to life through extended profiles of past and present masters of the art of making money.

The book is different from any other on the shelf today because it pulls no punches in offering strategies and tactics to win with customers, and simply is unconcerned with offending the lighthearted.

About the Author:

Herb D. Vest was born August 12, 1944, in Battle Creek, Michigan and reared in Borger, Texas. He attended school in the Texas Panhandle and in West Texas and held a variety of jobs from an early age, including newspaper delivery, caddy, carpenter’s helper, masonry helper, lumberyard hand, lumber sales, gas station attendant, bookkeeper, dock worker (union member), truck driver, yard worker, and painter. This early work experience offered a wealth of practical knowledge for Herb’s later business successes.

Herb was founder and CEO of H.D. Vest, Inc. from its inception until its merger with Wells Fargo in 2001. Founded in 1983 on a shoestring, the company offers financial services and products through a national network of approximately 6,000 tax and financial professionals who, collectively, advise an estimated 2 million individuals and small business clients. Their corporate office, located in the Dallas Metroplex, had more than 400 employees and was rapidly expanding. During his 18-year tenure as CEO, the company grew from $0 to nearly $200 million in revenue and during the last five years, the company achieved an average capital turnover of approximately 20 times with an average growth in revenue of 34% while maintaining profitability. H.D. Vest, Inc. was traded on NASDAQ under the symbol of HDVS.

Herb is currently founder and CEO of True, an Internet company devoted to developing and improving human relationships. Funding a multimillion-dollar psychological research project, the company has developed the only compatibility test independently certified by Integrated Knowledge Systems, Inc. to meet the Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing. True spearheads the effort to make dating safer by requiring applicants to undergo background checks and agree to a code of ethics before becoming members. Guided by expert psychologists, relationship counselors give advice in weekly publications designed to help members fulfill their goals of finding partners.
