H[OWELL], W[illiam]. Some Interesting Particulars of the Second Voyage Made by the Missionary Ship, the Duff; which Was Captured by the Buonaparte Privateer, in the Year 1800. By W. H., Superintendant to the Mission. Knaresbrough: Printed and Sold by Hargrove and Sons, 1809. 1st ed. 288pp. 19th-century 3/4 plum calf and pebble-grained boards, gilt-decorated raised spine bands, black morocco spine label. Some rubbing to spine and hinges, some faint scattered foxing, lower corner of one leaf repaired, else a very good or better copy. Rare, Worldcat locates five copies. Account of privateering in the Napoleonic era. The Duff was used by the London Missionary Society in transporting missionaries to the South Seas, including the first mission to Tahiti. In November 1799, the Duff was sailing to Rio de Janeiro for supplies when she was seized by the privateer Buonaparte off Cape Frio. The ship was taken to Monte Video; its passengers spent some time in Uruguay and Brazil before being sent home via Lisbon. Howell was the Superintendant of the mission. Bookseller Inventory # 62638
