About this Item

A small, hardbound 32mo in the Harper's "Half-Hour Series," grade it "very-good-plus" with some rub to corners and to the head and heel of spine, but still tight enough to close its own boards and text block. Dated 1878 to copyright page and 1879 to title page, while stamping in red ink to bottom of front board reads "copyright 1877, by Harper & Brothers." This is the first state of the hardcover, with the last line of pg. 44 duplicated to the top of pg. 45. (There was also a version in wraps, which is to say, "softcover," also 1879.) 87 books in the series listed in the preliminary matter, not including this title, which was actually No. 91. Tacked to the FFE is a small and well-preserved piece of newsprint offering a biography of the author and his family ("He is unmarried and lives at present in London," it says, while his brother William James is "one of the instructors in physiology in Harvard College.")
