About this Item

first edition (not stated); no dj, as issued; in Portuguese; #4 of the series Cadernos Didaticos UFRJ, it is a book edited by Mollica on sociolinguistics from the variationist point of view; on the third page inscribed by her and signed by Anthony J. Naro, who contributed several sections including "Modelos Quantitativos e Tratamento Estatistico"; from the library of the linguist Glenn Gilbert;, soft cover spine and corners rubbed, else in excellent condition, rated Near Fine; would be of interest to collectors of books on Labovian variation theory in sociolinguistics, especially as the methods of Labov and his successors have been applied to the wildly varying Brazilian Portuguese; Naro, Titular em Linguistica at UFRJ, is to my mind the conduit through which the influence from the north has been channeled; soft covers are purple with white lettering and pink with black lettering; large 4to - 11 5/8 inches high, 142 numbered pages. Store Description

Triple G Books is owned and operated by an emeritus professor of linguistics, who was also an ardent book collector over the period 1954 to 2007. Books for sale range from linguistics, pidgin & creole languages, sociolinguistics, anthropology, education, and comparative religion through modern first editions and German and Scandinavian books. A number of the books are valuable and hard to find, as for example a 1/2-leather-bound first edition of Alfred Russell Wallace's The Malay Archipelago (2 vols.), recently sold for presentation to the Mayor of London on his visit to Malaysia, and a first edition of H. G. Wells' The Time Machine, a novel of the 19th century pointing to a scary future, a continuing revelation to me. Triple G Books stands back of its books in every way.
