About this Item

2 volumes. xiii, plate, 562p; 579p. Contemporary quarter calf with gilt ruled spines over marbled boards. Both volumes are rebacked retaining most of the original spines. Complete with the inserted leaf from the Greek New Testament by William Pickering. The fourth edition, revised and corrected. FROM THE REFERENCE LIBRARY OF THE EARL OF MALMESBURY WITH THE MONOGRAM OF THE SECOND EARL ON THE SPINES. A richly annotated edition in brown ink by two contemporary hands. One script matches James Howard Harris 3rd Earl of Malmesbury while the second is probably his father. A number of entries have check marks and what clearly are shelf numbers noted in the margins. There are also a number of brief handwritten notations in the margins that include information about where and when a particular copy was purchased and in some cases what was paid. There are also some notations regarding gift inscriptions. James Edward Harris, 2nd Earl of Malmesbury (1778 ¿ 1841) received only a brief mentioning in the DNB citing his primary interest in game hunting and literature. James Howard Harris, 3rd Earl of Malmesbury (1807 ¿ 1889) was the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs during two brief periods. The extensive Library was primarily collected by the learned James Harris who was MP for Christchurch from 1761 until his death in 1780. It was sold at auction in 1950. A couple of spots on a few leaves in volume 1 and slight wear along the edges, otherwise a rather attractive copy with an unusual association. Bookseller Inventory # 6678
