About this title:

Synopsis: John Hughes, the Roman Catholic Bishop of New York, prevailed on the Irish Emigrant Society, a society composed mainly of Irish-born New Yorkers who were active in the commercial life of the city, to organize a safe deposit institution for the Irish community. In response to his prompting they formed the Emigrant Savings Bank. This financial enterprise was chartered in April 1850. There are fifty-nine volumes in the Emigrant Savings Bank collection. All known existing volumes in this collection are held at the New York Public Library, Center for the Humanities, Manuscripts and Archives Division. These priceless records create an outstanding socio-economic profile of mid 19th century Irish New York. The minutes of the Irish Emigrant Society have also been included in this collection because it was the parent society and its work closely complimented the strictly economic concerns of the Emigrant Bank. The first 2,500 Depositors are included in Volume 1. Volume 2 will contain the next 5,000 depositors and Volume 3 will complete the first test book.
