About this Item

With a Foreword by Max Eastman. New York: Mitchell Kennerley, 1929. Quarto, rebound in full navy-blue cloth, stamped in gold upon the spine. (14) pages, plus 24 leaves printed rectos only, comprising twenty-four full-page plates by Arnold Genthe. Very faint dampstain throughout, but not visibly affecting the plates, only the margins and part of the front matter, and hardly visible on the title-page spread. New endleaves and cloth-reinforced inner hinges. A long way from perfect but still an attractive item in very good condition. Inscribed and signed (to Alice Eastland) by Arnold Genthe, New York, 1930. "Originally trained as a classical scholar, Arnold Genthe (1869-1942) taught himself photography soon after emigrating from Germany in 1895. The success of his photographs of San Francisco's Chinatown led him to establish a local portrait studio. He became famous for his impressionistic portrayals of society women, artists, dancers, and theater personalities." (--Arnold Genthe Collection, Library of Congress). Bookseller Inventory # 10247
