About this Item

First edition of this Dublin-born writer's final dramatic novel. It is set in the south of Ireland and was much acclaimed in its day for its portrayal of everyday Irish life. Wilde's review at the time focused on the skillfully depicted minor characters and "complete panorama of provincial life." This is the original first edition of the one volume edition, not a modern reprint. The work was also issued as a triple-decker in the same year from the same publisher. 8vo. [4], 495, [9 (adv.)] pp. Wolff, 19th Century Fiction, 3046. Publisher's blue cloth, front cover with black-stamped title and ruled bands, spine with gilt-stamped title; moderately rubbed overall, spine darkened. Ex?social club library: paper shelving label on spine, call number on endpaper, rubber-stamp on title-page, no other markings. Small spots to a very few pages, most pages clean.
