About this title

Synopsis:

An Israeli diplomat traces his country's path from moral paragon to brutal oppressor. Former Israel ambassador guides the reader on an odyssey through 300 years of Jewish history up to the intifada of today's occupied West Bank. He shows how the fundamentalist Right is trying to transform Israel - in fact, recreating the medieval Jewish ghetto. It offers a series of policy alternatives enabling Israel to recognize its secular responsibilities as a nation while leaving its people free to pursue their own religious destinies.

From Library Journal:

The title of Leshem's polemic is an apt summary of his viewpoint. Though he purports to analyze the ethical dilemmas confronting the State of Israel, Leshem's perspective is colored by overt negativism--which is unfortunate, for he addresses an important subject. The burden of his thesis, the continuous isolation of the Jewish people both prior to and after the Emancipation, is bolstered by a highly selective overview of Jewish history especially in the modern period. Judgmental statements are presented as facts and sweeping generalizations ("Orthodoxy . . . wants the Jewish people and their state to dwell alone") and inflammatory insinuations abound. Not recommended.
