Taken from Chapter 8: The army Mandatory service For Jewish and many Druze Israelis, being in the army is a part of growing up. After high school, when they are eighteen years old, they must join the Israel Defense Force (IDF). Druze who are originally from neighboring Arab countries and Israel Arabs do not join the army. If war broke out between Israel and one of its Arab neighbors, the Druze might feel that they were attacking their own people. Men usually serve in the army for three years and women for two. They live on separate bases. Food, clothing, shelter, and even some entertainment are provided by the IDF. The soldiers receive only a little pocket money for themselves. Every other weekend, they are allowed to go home. On Saturday, their families can visit the base.
