Istar in Assur assembles all pieces of information concerning the role of Ishtar as one of the most important goddesses of the Mesopotamian pantheon in the Assyrian capital Assur. The study is based on the analysis of archaeological, architectural and above all, textual remains, ranging from the Early Dynastic period until after the Neo-Assyrian period. Her various manifestations such as ?Ishtar-Assuritu,? ?Belet-ekalli,? ?Ishtar-of-Ninive,? and ?Sharrat-nipha? are worked out in detail, together with the divine entourage of each specific manifestation. To elaborate her role within the pantheon of the city, she is juxtaposed with Aššur, Mullissu, Gula, and other gods. Additional studies specify her relation to the mortal inhabitants of the city: king, queen and people. The volume is supplemented by extensively annotated editions of two dozen texts from Middle and Neo-Assyrion times, many of them composed on hitherto-unpublished fragments. Bookseller Inventory #
