Spine faded, but only minor wear to cover. Light intermittent foxing. Bookplate of American historian Rufus K. Wyllys, and his ink stamp on fore-edges and endleaves. A very good copy of the First Edition. Set was also issued with map portfolio not present here. Sabin 3480; Palau 24218. The published record of one of many schemes to find a faster route to the Pacific, in the period after the acquisition of California and the settlement of Oregon. The Isthmus of Tehuantepec is the most narrow point in the national territory of Mexico, and has long been seen by the United States as a geopolitical alternative to the Panama Canal.
