Thick 12mo (175 x 95mm). 795pp., [5, catalogue of work of Giuseppe Vasi]. Engraved copperplate printer’s device to title depicting Romulus and Remus, the mythical founders of Rome. Illustrated throughout with two folding maps of Rome and interspersed engraved vignettes of views of architecture. Text in French. Excellent survival of original blue paper wrappers; (rear wrap worn but in tact, hinges tender and loose otherwise good). This first edition of the French translation is uncommon. Vasi is known for his magnificent tour books of Rome and other Italian cities. He published this map and a series of "itineraries" for eight days in which the "Grand Tourist" could see all of the sites that Giuseppe Vasi had illustrated in his seminal illustrated work, Delle Magnificenze di Roma antica e moderna, published from 1747-1761. This is one of the first of the printed guides that came after "tourism" was invented as a middle-class hobby in the 19th century. Mariano Vasi’s itinerary is divided into six routes or excursions, each of which will occupy one day, and the two other days occupied by site visits to Trastevere and the Vatican. Vasi sought to assist tourists with finding particularly interesting views and public edifices in over 390 points of interests and provides not only a detailed view of Baroque Rome, but also of Ancient, Medieval, Renaissance and Mannerist Rome. The "Grand Tour" became popular with the wealthy in the second half of the 18th century, and, if you were one of the lucky few with the money to make the tour as part of your education, you would certainly plan on spending some time in Rome.
